Guava isn't a new discovery. Long before anyone put it in a supplement, it was already doing its job — in kitchens, in home remedies, in traditions passed down for generations across three continents. We just happened to notice it belonged in oral care too.
Here's the actual story behind the fruit at the center of everything we make.
A Fruit With No Single Birthplace
Guava, botanically known as Psidium guajava, is native to the Americas, though researchers still debate exactly where it first grew wild — northern South America, the Amazon, Central America, and northeastern Brazil all have a claim. What's not up for debate is how far it traveled from there. Guava spread naturally from Mexico and the Caribbean all the way down to Argentina and Uruguay long before it became one of the most widely cultivated fruits on earth.
Today, guava is grown commercially across the globe, with India, China, Mexico, Egypt, and Brazil leading production. But its roots — literal and cultural — are firmly tropical American.
A Remedy Before It Was a Snack
In Mexico and across Central America and the Caribbean, guava wasn't just eaten. It was medicine. Traditional healers relied on it for digestive issues, fevers, wounds, and inflammation, long before modern labs existed to explain why it worked.
That knowledge didn't stay local. In India, guava — particularly the leaf — became a staple of Ayurvedic medicine, used to treat dysentery and diarrhea. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it found its own place in the herbal pharmacy. Across Africa, similar traditions developed independently. Three continents, three separate medical traditions, all arriving at the same fruit for many of the same reasons.
That's usually a good sign. When wildly different cultures with no contact independently decide the same plant is worth reaching for, it's rarely a coincidence.
What the Leaf Was Actually Doing
Here's where it gets specific to what we're building. Guava leaves, in particular, carry a compound called guajaverin, along with a range of other polyphenols responsible for the plant's antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Modern research has started catching up to what those traditional remedies were already doing. Clinical studies have tested guava leaf extract directly against oral bacteria — specifically Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis, the two bacterial species most responsible for cavities and gum disease. The results held up. In randomized, placebo-controlled trials, a mouth rinse containing guava leaf extract reduced plaque and improved gum health to a degree comparable with chlorhexidine — the gold-standard antiseptic used in clinical dentistry.
The difference is that chlorhexidine is known for staining teeth over time and altering taste with prolonged use. Guava leaf extract, in the same studies, didn't carry that downside. It did comparable work without the tradeoff — which is a big part of why we built around it instead of reaching for something synthetic.
The Fruit Itself Isn't Just Along for the Ride
While the leaf gets most of the oral care research attention, the fruit is doing plenty on its own. Guava is one of the most concentrated natural sources of vitamin C available — a single guava can contain more than double the standard daily reference intake, which works out to roughly four times the vitamin C of an orange, gram for gram. It's also rich in lycopene, quercetin, and other polyphenol antioxidants, plus a meaningful amount of fiber and potassium.
None of that is oral-care-specific, but it's part of why guava has stuck around in traditional diets for as long as it has. It wasn't valued for one single property — it was valued because it kept showing up useful, in one form or another, across a lot of different problems.
Why We Built Around It
We didn't pick guava because it's trendy. We picked it because the story checks out from multiple directions — traditional use across unrelated cultures, a specific and well-documented compound (guajaverin) doing real antibacterial work, and modern clinical trials backing up what healers were already relying on generations ago.
That's the ingredient at the center of what we make. Not a flashy synthetic additive with a marketing-friendly name, but a fruit that's been quietly proving itself for a very long time — we just finally started measuring why.
